In Breath of Death: An Oilfield Mystery (Oilfield Mysteries Book 3), Malvina Lerma takes readers on an exciting journey into the world of oil drilling, corporate sabotage, and personal struggles. The story revolves around Charlie Pergolas, a strong-willed and determined woman who is trying to do her job while dealing with financial problems and strange accidents at the drilling site.
The story follows Charlie Pergolas, who accepts a job in Santa Maria despite her concerns because she needs the money. Charlie is good at her job, but things start going wrong at the drilling site. There are many accidents, and she starts to think someone is trying to sabotage the company. The plot has many twists and turns, with Charlie dealing with accidents, poisoning, and even a hit-and-run accident. The suspense builds up as she tries to find out who is behind the sabotage. The mystery keeps you guessing until the end, with the author doing a great job of keeping the reader engaged.
One of the things I loved most was how well Lerma captured the intense environment of the oil industry in this book. The technical details were explained in a way that even someone unfamiliar with the field could understand, adding depth and authenticity to the story. Charlie's character was relatable, and her persistence and strength made her a compelling protagonist. Her budding relationship with Ben provides a softer contrast to the high-stakes drama at the rig, and their moments together offer a glimpse of hope amidst the chaos.
Overall, there was absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. The pacing of the book was well done and will keep its readers hooked without feeling overwhelmed. This book was free of errors, which shows its impeccable editing. The ending of the book was satisfying, providing a sense of closure to the story. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for its engaging storyline and well-developed characters. If you enjoy mysteries with a strong female lead and a detailed look into the oil industry, this book is a must-read.

This is Ms. Lerma's 3rd in a series of Oilfield Mysteries. Her background as an oil engineer provides a different and very interesting backdrop to the story of Charlie, our protagonist, a woman in a line of work that has been mostly male. Charlie is an oil rig supervisor and due to the circumstances she encounters while supervising the drilling becomes an amateur sleuth. I love that Ms. Lerma places the Cast of Characters in the beginning of each of her books. It is a great set up for the adventure that is to come. She also does an excellent job of explaining in layman's terms the oil drilling process and includes great graphics to help the reader understand Charlie's job and accomplishments. Once the stage is set the action begins. Work, drilling, love, betrayal, murder ensues and you are on a read that does not disappoint. Her latest book in the series, "Breath of Death" delves deeper into Charlie's persona, introduces characters that are evil and develops the intrigue and mystery to a climax that is unexpected. This time I purchased the Kindle version and thoroughly enjoyed the book as well as the convenience of the Kindle. Read these books - they are an adventure and escape.
Breath of Death (third in the series) by Malvina Lerma:
Great book! It is an easy and quick read: very enjoyable with a dash of suspense.
I like that I learn -a bit more- about oil drilling with each book.
And I like following Charlie in her sleuthing adventures and her ability to succeed in a dominate male profession.
This book covered the threat of hydrogen sulfide: I did not realize that drilling wells could be so dangerous.
I would recommend this to anyone who just wants a quick escape and maybe even learn a bit about oil drilling.
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Amazon Review
Well, here she goes again. The 3rd book in a series of Ms Charlie Pergolas drilling California oil wells while simultaneously solving murders. Contained within this reading is an air of suspense while the reader also learns drilling operations. So, this book will teach a little and solve a little. Awaiting the 4th book.
